Senior Food Distributions and Delivery Programs

The Food Bank distributes food to 13,000 seniors with limited income at nearly 50 sites throughout San Diego County every month. The Senior Food Program provides a monthly 30-pound box of food to seniors aged 60 and over who meet income guidelines. Please note: No Senior Food Distributions are scheduled on Saturdays or Sundays. Income eligibility is a verbal self-certification; no documentation of income is required.

Please bring these documents with you when you sign up:

  • Valid ID with date of birth
  • Proof of Address (i.e. utility, water, phone bill)

Kimball Senior Center: The San Diego Food Bank Senior Food Distribution will continue on the fourth Thursday of the month from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. for seniors 60 and over, at 1221 D Ave. in National City.

National City Senior Nutrition Center continues to serve grab and go meals Monday through Friday between 11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. at 1415 D Ave. in National City. Home delivered meals will also continue as usual. Recipients can have contact everyday with a delivery person who not only greets them, but is also there to check on their well-being. Jewish Family Services (JFS) offers mobile delivery of meals on a sliding scale. This service is available to seniors with disabilities or health conditions that prevent them from leaving their home. Meals are prepared daily in the JFS onsite kosher kitchen. JFS also offers low-sodium, gluten-free and vegetarian options. Contact (858) 637-3210 for more information.

Social Community Activities and Fitness Options for Seniors

Virtual Classes

Jewish Family Services offers free, virtual activities for seniors every week:

  • Mondays at 1 p.m. - Sing along with Aviva: Watch fun videos with the lyrics of popular songs and sing together for one hour.
  • Tuesdays at 2 p.m, or Thursdays at 10 a.m.: Balboa Avenue Older Adult Center friends meeting: Learn, talk, socialize, sing, exercise, and meditate together with your friends.
  • Wednesdays at 11 a.m.: Chair exercises with Aviva: Grab a chair that works for you and be ready to exercise with Aviva. Missed the Zoom? No problem. You can follow along with our pre-recorded video whenever you're in the mood. Watch Exercise at Home with Aviva.
  • Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 10 to 11 a.m. - Keep moving with Virtual Yoga with Yumi. Learn Simple breathing, systematic movements and mediation help to maintaining both physical and mental health. To register, contact Yumi via email at yusorake@cox.net.

City of San Diego

Join the Park de la Cruz Community Center on the outdoor patio at 3901 Landis St. for weekly events:

  • Yoga Tuesdays & Thursdays from 7 - 8 a.m. Calling all early risers! Discover how yoga can strengthen your core, improve posture and decrease stress and anxiety. Wear comfortable and loose fitting clothes. Se Habla Espanol. Click here to register.
  • Mindful Mornings Wednesdays from 10 -11 a.m. This program will incorporate various parts of mindfulness from meditation, stretching and balance training to help improve daily living. No equipment needed to join. Click here to register.
  • Must See Movies every Friday at 12:05 p.m. Watch distinguished films that have transcended time and trends. The film host will introduce each movie and then lead a question and answer session afterwards. Click here to register.

National City

  • Looking for a fun and free activity in your neighborhood? National City Movie Nights is a perfect chance to relax and enjoy a safe and special night under the stars. All movies start at dusk (approx. 15 minutes after sunset). Movies and event are subject to change - click here for a list of upcoming films.
  • Join the National City Library online and play Loteria! Available every third Thursday from 6 - 7 p.m, all you need is a computer or smartphone with internet access. If you don't have the tablas and tokens to play, you can pick up a Loteria starter pack at the library. To join click on this link. Chula Vista

  • Norman Park Senior Center offers free morning fitness classes Monday - Thursday from 8 - 9 a.m. Norman Park Senior Center is open on Monday - Friday from 8 a.m. - 3 p.m. Closed on Saturday and Sunday.

Senior Mental Health Resources

The City of San Diego's Parks & Recreation Age Well Services staff are offering free calling services Monday through Friday between 8 - 11 a.m. to check in and say, "Hello." If you would like to add yourself or a loved one to the Age Well Services Social Call List, contact (619) 236-6905 or email thescroll@sandiego.gov or click here for more information about the program.

The County of San Diego's Senior Mental Health Team can provide crisis assessments and assistance for individuals age 60 and older dealing with mental health issues. If you or a loved one is in need of help, please send the team an email or call (800) 339-4661.

Senior Legal Resources

Elder Law & Advocacy provides adults age 60 and older with an affordable way to take care of simple legal matters. Referrals are available for more complex legal assistance.
