Highlights of February General Membership Meeting

We had a wonderful General Membership Meeting on February 24 at the North Inland Live Well Center in Escondido. Here are some of the highlights and resources.

First we heard from Beth Brainerd Hallock, the Senior Services Program Manager of Interfaith Community Services. Their programs help empower clients to lead healthy and independent lives. She presented an overview of their numerous services, including:

  • Minor Home Repair. Operating throughout North San Diego County, volunteers and local businesses are recruited to assist in making minor home repairs for qualified seniors. These repairs, such as fixing leaky faucets, repairing screen doors and windows, and installing grab bars or smoke alarms, make it easier and safer for seniors to stay in their own homes.
  • Mobile Senior Center. Low-cost healthy lunches and daily guest speakers provide an opportunity for socialization 5 days a week at different locations in San Marcos, Vista, and Oceanside.
  • "How R U?" Calls. Free, daily phone calls to check on participating North County seniors that live alone. If a call is not answered and they cannot reach you, a volunteer will call next door neighbors, relatives, or emergency personnel (if necessary) to do a welfare check.
  • And a variety of other support and referral services. For more information, visit the Interfaith Community Services website at https://www.interfaithservices.org or call (760) 489-6380 (Inland Service Center in Escondido).

Our second presentation was by David Weil, the HICAP Program Manager at Elder Law & Advocacy. Elder Law & Advocacy is a caring group of experienced elder law staff and trained volunteers who serve over 8,000 seniors annually in both San Diego and Imperial Counties. The organization provides free and low-cost civil legal services, Medicare and Medicare related counseling and advocacy, referrals to community senior service providers and community education. HICAP, which stands for Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program, offers many free services such as:
